CardioVascular Disease Prevention and Recovery Programme

The Cardiovascular Disease Prevention and Recovery Programme (CVDPRP) is a unique service that complements medical treatment following a cardiac event, procedure or surgery. It is individualised and designed for and by you, guided by medical and health professionals. CVDPRP offers a comprehensive cardiovascular rehabilitation programme that begins on the day you find out that you need treatment, and continues for as long as it takes you to make a complete recovery.

The CVDPRP is a multi-faceted, multi-disciplinary programme. Dietitians, pharmacists, health professionals and medical practitioners conduct education, information and exercise assessment sessions. A health professional will contact you within the first two weeks after the event. If you are not contacted, please ring 078 747 1859. Continue with your walking schedule and participate in guided exercise sessions as soon as you feel comfortable being out of the house for at least two hours and you can easily walk for six minutes.

Members of the team are prepared to advise and assist you to design a programme that is tailor-made for you. Your current routine will be reviewed by qualified professionals. Baseline and follow-up assessments, will determine where you are in your recovery process. During guided sessions, your blood pressure and heart rate will be monitored and progress supervised. Your activity plan for each week will be based on performance results in the previous session, and agreed between you and the Programme team. The Programme enhances medical treatment and is an important part of your follow-up. It is far more than simple exercise. It also provides important information that you can use to help yourself. These sessions enhance your understanding of heart disease, how it is diagnosed and what treatments are available. You will not only learn what medical and health professionals can do for you but what is within your own power to improve in your daily life. With simple adjustments, you can delay, correct and even prevent the negative effects and progression of cardiovascular disease. You look at what you eat. Decide what food choices will result in better nutrition, weight and cholesterol control and, at the same time, enjoy tasty food. You want to know whether the medications that you are taking are effective, why or why not. You will learn how to report symptoms and side effects to the prescribing physician. It includes monitoring the effects of medications, recognising any arising signs, symptoms or complications and the knowledge to seek treatment early. Medications can be reviewed, and treatments revised. It is also an opportunity to see whether improvements can be made to your current diet and activity programme. It helps you understand how emotions play their part, and discover different ways to save situations. You will recognise positive effects of genuine and effective support. CVDPRP enables you to make your own plans and find a new, better normal.

Guided CVDPRP sessions are held at the Helderberg Village (HV) clubhouse on Thursdays, from 11.00 to 13.00. Education and information sessions take place between 11.00 and 12.00, followed by exercise assessment from 12.00 to 13.00. We have arranged for the cycle of education sessions to repeat every 8 weeks, so you can attend when it is possible to fit sessions into your schedule. Consultations and additional supervised exercise sessions are extra, but the baseline and follow-up assessment plus CVDPRP sessions at Helderberg Village is considerd an extention to your medical follow-up and are provided at no additional cost to you. The Helderberg Cardiac Support Group can accept donations, but access to the programme is available to all, regardless of ability to pay.

All Thursday CVDPRP sessions are held at the Helderberg Village Clubhouse. Please bring a list of your medications and wear comfortable shoes and clothes. Arrive at 10.30, to allow time for security procedures. Your name will be on the list at the Helderberg Village east gate. Tell the gate attendant that you are attending cardiac sessions. Show them your ID or driver's license and vehicle disk. You will receive a code that allows you to easily enter and exit. A map and directions to the Helderberg Village clubhouse provided. Park your car in the upper parking areas, then come to the clubhouse gym/exercise studio.
